From a USPS Industry Alert:

The U.S. Postal Service will deliver more than 15 billion pieces of mail this holiday season.  Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, the Postal Service also expects to deliver 850 million packages – an increase of over 10% compared to last year.

“The Postal Service is well prepared to meet our customers’ needs during the holiday season, especially as demand for package deliveries continues to grow,” said Megan J. Brennan, Postmaster General and CEO.

Strategic Readiness Measures included in Peak Planning:

  • Expanded Delivery Window – carriers will deliver packages in the early morning, late afternoons and on Sundays during the holiday season where volume warrants.
  • Nearly 1,600 vehicles have been leased to supplement existing fleet of 228,000 vehicles
  • The Postal Service has expanded capacity with new equipment:
  • 7 Small Package Sorter Systems (SPSS)
  • 2 Parcel L&DC sorters
  • 28 Automated Package Bundle Sorters (APBS)
  • 3 APBS Induction Systems
  • 2 Automated Package Processing Systems (APPS)
  • 3 New Universal Sorters (USS)

Commentary:  Standard/Marketing mail, First-Class Mail, and Periodical mailers are probably not getting a warm and fuzzy feeling as to their importance to the Postal Service this holiday season, based on the lack of a mention in this peak season USPS goals communication.  Maybe another communication telling mailers what steps have been taken to ensure timely delivery of critical letters and flats, and the USPS commitment to those customers as well  is forthcoming.  Stay tuned.
