Mail Delivery Times and Realistic Expectations

Change of Address: Mail Delivery Times and Realistic Expectations.

Good post on a much-misunderstood subject, especially around Standard mail delivery times.

Something to add, at MTAC we have had a difficult time getting the USPS to understand that mailers want predictable delivery, and that early delivery is just as bad as late in some cases.  Consistent and predictable delivery should be considered just as important as speedy delivery.

5 Day Delivery – The FULL Story

without comments

I was amazed to see the flood of news coverage, even on my local TV station, regarding USPS recommended 5 day delivery.  I had the opportunity to watch the Senate proceedings as they happened yesterday, and some key items are being completely left out of the general coverage.

First off, the assumption that the off day would be Saturday.  The Postmaster General made in clear that he was requesting the ability to switch to a 5 day delivery schedule, with the off day being one of their lighter delivery days. Yes, Saturday was mentioned – but Wednesday was also mentioned as being a possibility.

Second – timing.  The PMG suggested that this may be a seasonal thing – the slower months of June, July, and August only – for 2009 and 2010.  Six day delivery would return for the busy Fall and Winter mailing seasons.

All of this is public record.  Go to this Senate Committee Hearing page here, to access PDF copies of the statements made by PMG Potter; Senator Thomas Carper; Senator Susan Collins; Dan G. Blair, Chairman , Postal Regulatory Commission; and Phillip Herr, Director, Physical Infrastructure Issues , Government Accountability Office.

The newly-revamped USPS RIBBS website here http://ribbs.usps.gov/

has a new link to this page, Mailer Information – What’s Hot:
http://www.usps.com/communications/news/bmcupdates.htm
This What’s Hot page has a short list of valuable links to information on

  • Pending Route Adjustment Effective Dates (critical carrier route information.  Carrier routes will be adjusted frequently over the next few months, mailers should view this information so as to keep their mailing lists up to date)
  • A link to In Home Date Guidelines – for planning purposes
  • A link to Modern Service Standards
  • A link to FSS Flats Sequence Strategy information
  • other valuable mailing links

RIBBS is really developing into a terrific, modern-looking, easy to navigate postal resource, with timely information made more accessible.  This page is worthy of a bookmark, and should be the first stop when searching for detailed information from the Postal Service.

National Mail Service Updates

without comments

The USPS is working to improve communications to Drop Ship mailers, with a Service Updates page:

http://www.usps.com/communications/news/serviceupdates.htm

Information on this site is provided for mailers with plant-verified drop shipments going to postal facilities that are either closed or have limits due to natural disasters or severe weather conditions.  In addition to the obvious (hurricanes, tornadoes), fires and flooding situations are also covered.  The site will provide mailers with optional destinating mail entry information.  Info is updated on a daily basis.

The more information available, the better-equipped mailers will be to adjust to real-world issues and conditions in a timely manner.  Any and all efforts to keep mailers informed should be applauded.

Excellent Article

without comments

There is a great article posted at the postcom.org website, written by Kate Muth, President of Muth Communications, written for Mailing Systems Technology magazine.  It gives insight into the rate process that is being pioneered now, complete with suggestions for Congress.

This is a matter that bears close watching by all in the mailing industry.
