Six Sigma: Postal Service touting program of failure to managers?

Is the Postal Service becoming too dependent on a management program that has been discounted by some as a proven failure? It appears they are employing ‘Six Sigma’ heavily[1], but history and the S&P 500 may be proof as to why the Postal Service may be investing in the wrong direction with Six Sigma. I’ve never a big fan of these types of corporate initiatives, having survived several, including everything from “Quality Circles” to ISO9000In my personal experience, you end up serving the process far more often than the process serves you.

New USPS Mail Anywhere Program Fact Sheet

The USPS has launched the new “Mail Anywhere” service that allows customers to use the same mailing permit at every mailing location, rather than having to open, maintain, and pay fees for multiple permits.  Local Permit Number or Company Imprint Indicia may be used at any location.

Police say man installed skimmer in post office kiosk to steal bank information

KEARNS — A man installed a skimming device at a Salt Lake County post office to steal bank information and pin numbers, police say.

So far, six people have turned to police after money began disappearing from their bank accounts, Salt Lake City police detective Cody Lougy said. Police traced the incursions back to a self-serve kiosk at the Kearns post office, 5495 S. 4015 West, between Dec. 12 and Dec. 18.

“The skimming device was able to read the cardholders’ or the victims’ account number, as well as their pin number,” Lougy said. “Once they have that information, the perpetrator is able to make a fake card, and he has been able to go to various ATMs throughout our city and withdraw money.”

Outbox fizzles, CEO blames USPS

An Austin based startup that promised to revolutionize the way Americans read postal mail is going out of business. Outbox was founded by a pair of Harvard Business School graduates with little or no actual business experience, Evan Baehr and Will Davis. CEO Baehr’s resume consists almost entirely of time spent on the federal payroll, or at right wing lobbying organizations.

Despite the absence of work experience, investors backed the company, and it began small scale operations in Austin in 2011, later expanding to San Francisco. But they had a problem, as the founders explain on their blog:

“Although an early test with the USPS that let users redirect their mail to us showed signs of success and operational simplicity, an interview by CNBC triggered a request from the Postmaster General himself to meet in Washington, DC. In one of the most surreal moments of our lives, we had our very own Mr. Smith Goes to Washington encounter where the senior leadership of USPS made it clear that they would never participate in any project that would limit junk mail and that they were immediately shutting down our partnership. This 30-minute meeting was the end of our business model.”
