Mail Disruption Report – Isaac Status

Hurricane/Tropical Storm Isaac: The U.S. Postal Service is now in the recovery phase following Hurricane/Tropical Storm Isaac. USPS has implemented emergency recovery plans from the Florida panhandle to southern Louisiana. But conditions change quickly, and customers should check for updates as the recovery period continues.

Postal Customers May Need “Hold Mai” or “Change of Address” Due to Isaac.

Hurricane/Tropical Storm Isaac may have damaged some residences, leading customers to seek a hold on their mail or a Change of Address. “Hold Mail” is intended for customers who have left their homes and plan to return within 30 days. Customers who cannot occupy their homes within 30 days must submit a “Change of Address” order before USPS can deliver their mail to another address.

A temporary change of address is intended for customers who plan on returning to their residences within six months. Customers NOT planning to return to their current address within six months should submit a Permanent Change of Address order. Change of Address cards are available from letter carriers and at Post Offices. Also, customers can submit change of address information to the Postal Service on its website,

Customers who have questions about mail delivery and other retail services in their areas can telephone the Postal Service at 800-ASK-USPS (275-8777).

Customers can help USPS make prompt and reliable mail deliveries:

  • Clear debris that may be blocking blocks access to mailboxes.
  • Customers with damaged or destroyed mailboxes should provide secure receptacles with an address clearly displayed before carriers can leave mail. Mail cannot be delivered unless customers provide such receptacles.


Jackson, MS: On Aug 31, delivery and retail operations will resume in ZIP Codes 395, 396 and at the Picayune Carrier Annex (which includes ZIP Codes 39466 and 39426). Normal operations will continue as long as conditions remain safe.

Letter carriers will attempt to deliver all Social Security checks as addressed. The Postal Service has special procedures in place to make sure customers receive their checks.

If customers are no longer at their homes due to conditions caused by the storm, or if the roads to their homes are too dangerous to travel, letter carriers will return Social Security checks to the Post Office at the end of their Aug. 31 delivery day. Customers who do not receive their Social Security checks at their homes before 4 p.m. on Aug 31 may visit their Post Office 4-7 p.m. to pick them up. Customers must have proper identification to pick up their checks.


New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Lafayette, LA: All offices are resuming service Aug. 31. Deliveries, and Social Security checks will be made statewide to accessible addresses. New Orleans, LA, Post Offices will be open and mail delivery returns Friday to New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Lafayette and surrounding postal facilities where Isaac caused service disruptions. Friday’s mail will include Social Security checks, medicine and mail that could not be delivered Aug. 28. USPS will attempt to deliver checks until 3 p.m., Aug. 31. After 3 p.m., checks and other mail will be available at postal facilities from 4-6 p.m. Customers will be required to present government-issued identification — such as a driver’s license — to collect their mail.

Delivery will be normal Sept. 1. However, customers may pick up remaining Social Security checks on hand at Postal facilities from 4-6 p.m. The Postal service will make every effort to get Social Security checks into the hands of customers before the Sept. 3 Labor Day holiday.

PRC denies newspaper group’s request to delay Valassis deal – postalnews blog.

This whole thing still makes me uneasy.  There seems to be a perceptible level of arrogance in the PRC responses, that leaves a bad taste.  This is in keeping with the “times are tough so we can do whatever we want” attitude the USPS sometimes takes.

Is this part of a larger strategy to divide the industry, and get the mailers so preoccupied with fighting amongst themselves, the USPS can step in and compete directly?  The result would be bad for all parties concerned.
