USPS Price Change Weekend and Missed Deadlines

without comments

PostalOne wasn’t exactly stable yesterday, with two separate outages reported.

This today from the DMM Advisory:
“PostalOne! ® Release 29.0.2 Deployment will require an outage during the scheduled maintenance window from 4 a.m. to 8 a.m. CST on Sunday, January 22, 2012. During this maintenance window, PostalOne! ®, Facility Access and Shipment Tracking (FAST®) online, and Web Services will be unavailable.”

This outage was not expected.  However, I do expect that the upcoming price change weekend will be rocky.  So much time was squeezed, as the USPS is not respecting the scheduling times set by the agreed-upon industry/USPS schedule commonly referred to as 2 + 2, posted here at RIBBS.   A schedule only works if the participants make the deadlines, which has not been the case.  Mail software vendors are taking heat for not getting updates out in a timely manner so that companies can prepare for the changes – that criticism is misdirected.

At one point the USPS settled upon May as the month for price changes.  This makes sense.  December is not conducive to putting the final touches on programming and testing.  April/May is.  And regardless, deadlines must be realistically set – and met – in the majority of the time.  Things happen, which is understandable, but setting unrealistic expectations sets everything up to fail from the start.  Once dates are set – every effort should be made to meet them, not disregard them.

Be prepared for possible issues for the transition on Monday, keeping my fingers crossed at this end.
