Full Service Intelligent Mail: The Cornerstone to the Success of the Mailing Industry – I Beg To Differ

Full Service Intelligent Mail: The Cornerstone to the Success of the Mailing Industry | Articles & Archives | Mailing Systems Technology.

Link to a USPS article that likens Full Service Intelligent Mail to the movie “Field of Dreams”.

Of course, there are a couple of USPS Confirm Service-related items in the article that bother me to no end.  Note that Confirm tracking service is never mentioned in the article, however:

“Both the sender and preparer of a mailing can be kept informed as the mailing is processed all the way to the point of delivery”

This is not possible without Confirm service.  It is NOT INCLUDED with Full Service Intelligent Mail.  It can be added on, at an additional cost, to both Basic and Full Service Intelligent Mail via Confirm.

and

“Intelligent Mail® is the platform that provides data focused upon individual consumers. It allows a link between the digital and physical. Emails that inform or confirm the delivery of mail items; e.g. an email that lets you know the Field of Dreams DVD is being delivered today. This type of data flow is critical to keeping mail relevant; this is especially true for the younger generations.”

On these great ideas, I totally agree – but – this also is only possible for those Intelligent Mail users that add on and utilize USPS Confirm service.  The USPS has no other mechanism to provide mailers with the data in order to do what is described here.  Also, even with Confirm, the USPS only provides raw data.  It takes companies like intelisent and others to convert that data into user-friendly formats.  The USPS clearly recognizes the value of what can be done with Confirm.  I wish they would say so more clearly.

Dead Tree Edition: USPS Is Wasting Money on Unwanted Services, Publishing Executive Says.
I don’t know a lot about Periodicals, but these guys do.  Good article.

I don’t think Periodical mail is the only area where the USPS are purposefully making a product look like a money loser, either.
