National Anthem, American Flag, Respect and Tradition

with one comment

Although this is outside of the scope of my usual post topics, since this occurred at NPF it bears some relevance to Postal Affairs.  At the opening session of the National Postal Forum, in the past it has always been a tradition to include a color guard, and a rendition of the National Anthem.  I received several comments privately regarding some issues this year.  The color guard was missing.  The flag was computer generated on the presentation screen.  In keeping with the Nashville theme, the National Anthem was a stylized, country version – although not traditional, those who I spoke to did not have a problem with the arrangement.  However, the gentleman that performed the Anthem also wore his hat throughout.  I am sure this was not an intentional slight, but Veterans and others in attendance felt it was disrespectful.  I tried to think back to where I learned flag etiquette – it was as a Girl Scout in grade school.  Not so sure young people today always have the opportunity to learn about the Anthem, flag, and respect.  Those of us who want the traditions continued have a responsibility to pass that knowledge along.

Scroll to the bottom of this page for some more information.  What do you think?
